Davidov's Elementary Algebra

by A. Yu. Davidov

Translated by Valery Manokhin, PhD

The algebra course written by the founding president of the Moscow Mathematical Society, in first faithful English translation from the original Russian edition. Five divisions and 478 numbered articles run from algebraic signs and the fundamental operations through polynomials, the greatest common divisor, algebraic and continued fractions, ratio and proportion; equations of the first degree in one, two and several unknowns; powers and roots, irrational and incommensurable quantities, Newton’s binomial, quadratic equations and their investigation, imaginary quantities and equations of the third and fourth degree; indeterminate analysis; and progressions, series, logarithms and compound interest. Full solutions to the problems are included.

5 chapters · 478 numbered articles · 509 pages

Work through first

Covers much of the same ground

  • The 1908 single volume is 292 pages of exposition with no exercises at all. This one is 509 pages and 478 numbered articles and prints full solutions to its problems. Neither carries functions or graphs.

  • Part II carries coordinates, the function concept and graphs. This book has none of them anywhere in its 509 pages, and goes further instead on indeterminate analysis, imaginary quantities and compound interest.

  • Part I is the first-course half — 152 pages, 126 articles, 239 graded exercises with answers. This book is the whole course in one volume, with full solutions, but no functions and no graphs; those are in Part II.

These overlap heavily. Each note says what that book has which this one does not — the differences are what decide between them.
