Teaching at home

How do I teach math with a proof-based approach at home?▼

Use a textbook that proves each rule before using it, and work the proofs with the student rather than skipping to the exercises. Kiselev's Arithmetic does this from the first operation: why the sum does not depend on the order, why long division works. Read a section together, have the student restate the argument in their own words, then do the exercises. Move on only when the student can explain why, not just how. The same method carries through his Algebra, Geometry and Calculus — see Where to Start for the order.

Is there one coherent curriculum from arithmetic to calculus without switching publishers?▼

Yes. Kiselev wrote the whole school course himself — Arithmetic, Algebra Parts I and II, Planimetry, Stereometry and Calculus — and the books use one notation and one method throughout. Add Rybkin's problem collections for geometry and trigonometry, which were written to accompany them. The ladder on Where to Start lists the order and the ages, and the Curriculum page places each book against US, English and Ontario school years.

How is this different from Singapore Math, Art of Problem Solving or Math Mammoth?▼

These are the original school textbooks of a proof-based tradition, not a modern programme. Singapore Math and Math Mammoth are elementary and middle-school programmes built on worked procedures and visual models; Art of Problem Solving is a competition-oriented series that begins at pre-algebra. The Russian books prove every rule from arithmetic onward, run as one sequence through calculus, and cost a fraction of a programme with workbooks and videos. They assume a parent or tutor who reads alongside a younger student. See the full comparison.

Translations & Accuracy

Are these new translations?▼

Yes. These are the first complete and faithful English translations directly from the original Russian editions. Not adaptations or rewrites.

Are the translations complete?▼

Yes. Each translation follows the original Russian edition section by section — every definition, proof, problem and answer, nothing abridged or adapted. If you find a mistake, tell us through the contact page.

How does this compare to other Kiselev translations?▼

Many earlier translations were abridged, adapted, or based on later simplified editions. This is the complete original Kiselev translation unchanged.

Curriculum & Use

What grades is Kiselev's Arithmetic for?▼

US grades 4–7, UK Years 5–8 — roughly ages 9 to 12. Every book’s placement is on its page. Adults find it demanding and rewarding too.

Can I use it as my only math textbook?▼

For arithmetic, algebra and geometry, yes — it is self-contained. It does not teach statistics, probability or coordinate geometry, which every modern exam includes. The curriculum page says what to source elsewhere.

What about standardized test prep?▼

Kiselev builds deep conceptual understanding, which is the foundation of all testing. Students who understand deeply typically excel on tests too, but it's not the primary focus.
